Our guest for this session of ‘The Mindset Shift’ is John Lamphiere. He has nearly 30 years’ experience in sales, having worked for some of the largest global technology companies. Throughout John’s conversation with Tim McCarthy, he shares some great lessons that he has learnt throughout his career journey. Let’s take a look:
Try your best to find a job that aligns with your passions. John realised from a young age that he had a passion for people, and he had a great ability to interact and connect with people. This is what led him into sales.
It’s important to remember that most people don’t have a linear path. It’s rarely as straight forward as knowing from a young age what exactly you want to do and following that narrow path. As humans, our aspirations and wants in life are constantly evolving. John says it’s important to understand this when entering the working world. Be kind to yourself and accept that there are going to be bumps and detours along the way.
Never underestimate people management. It is easy to control what you are doing, but when it comes to controlling what others are doing, it’s a whole different story. John had to learn to trust others and understand that his way of doing things wasn’t the only way.
John and his team faced redundancies during the pandemic last year. The main learning John took out of this tough time was the importance of taking time out. John didn’t go searching for a job immediately, he enjoyed some down time with his family and even took up a garden architecture course. He explains that taking this time out allowed him to gain a more objective viewpoint instead of impulsively jumping into a new job.
